Great Black & White Photographers Part ll


John Gutmann is a German painter and photographer who was born in 1905. He first attended school at the State Academy of Arts and Crafts in Breslau, Germany. He then Moved to Berlin and earned a masters degree at the State Institute for Higher Education.Not much is known about his early life other than that he comes from a wealthy Jewish family in Germany. 

In 1933 he got his first job  as a photographer at Presse-Foto in Berlin. He soon Had to leave Germany because on the Nazis. He moved to New York City and was hired as a photographer at Pix Inc. 

He later moved to San Fransisco and worked at San Fransisco State College where he founded the Creative Photography Program there. He worked there until 1973 when he retired. He lived in San Fransisco until he died in 1998. His works are still displayed in the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art. His most famous book is "The Restless Decade" which was published in 1984.
